Permits are the way the City of Lighthouse Point regulates construction. There are several different types of permits, based on the type of construction.

Most major projects will require permits of some kind. This is necessary to ensure that all buildings meet minimum standards which protect its occupants and neighbors in everyday living and in the case of emergencies or natural disasters.
Some minor projects, such as painting, laying carpet and tile are allowed without obtaining building permits. However the construction of such projects should be in conformance with all applicable codes.

If you begin construction without the required permit(s), a "Stop Work Order" will immediately be issued by an Inspector and a Notice of Violation will be issued by the City’s Code Enforcement Department. You will be required to apply for and receive the permit(s) for the work and pay additional fees (twice the amount of the original fee).
After the permit has been properly issued, you will then be required to uncover any work which has been covered so that it may be inspected prior to the release of the "Stop Work Order", or the building official may allow an engineer or architect to inspect and take responsibility for the work. He would then have to write a letter to the building department accepting responsibility for the work and assuring the work complies with the code.
In some cases, regulations or codes may not permit the type of construction that has been done. In this case, you may be required to replace or restore the area to its original condition prior to your construction.
Depending on the type of permit, permits may be issued to property owners (for work on owner-occupied single-family residences) or licensed contractors.
After your contractor has completed their work and prior to making a final payment, make sure the job has passed all required City inspections and has been "finaled out".

The State requires house plans to be destroyed ten years from when a Certificate of Occupancy was issued. Other types of permits, such as re-roof, driveways, remodels, etc. have a ten year retention period. When plans meet their retention period, they are destroyed.
If you reside at the residence, yes, for most types of permits. However, all electrical, roofing, and piling work must be done by a licensed contractor.
Please know, that when a permit is issued as an owner/builder permit, the owner is stating that they know the Florida Building Code and Lighthouse Point Zoning Code, the order and types of inspections required for that type of permit, and that they may be responsible for any/all injuries/accidents/corrections that may result on the site.

Demolition permits are valid for 60 days. All other types of permits are valid for 180 days. For every completed inspection, the permit will be extended either 60 or 180 days, depending on the permit type. If the permit should expire, a one-time renewal fee of $35 may be paid to extend your permit.

If the survey is more than 12 months old, the owner will need to complete a Zoning Affidavit, which states that nothing on the survey has changed. If work was completed on the property that will alter the survey, a new survey will be required.

Now that you have your building permit and you have begun construction, you will need to have some inspections. The type of construction that you are doing will determine when an inspection is needed, the type of inspection, and the number of inspections. For example, installing a wood, aluminum, or vinyl fence requires at least one structural and one zoning inspection.
The structural inspection is to assure compliance to the Florida Building Code and the approved set of building plans. The zoning inspection is to assure that the fence meets the requirements of the City as to its location and height. If the completed construction work is the same as the approved set of plans, it should pass all of the inspections the first time. If the work is not installed per the approved plans, it will fail and will need corrective work done. When the work fails an inspection, a "red tag" will be issued from the applicable Inspector. The "red tag" will state what needs to be corrected prior to calling in for a re-inspection.

A construction project will not be considered completed until it passes all required inspections. If a contractor is doing the work for you, it is important to make sure all inspections have passed before submitting final payment. If you have a contractor doing the work, they will call in for the inspections as they proceed with the construction. If you are doing the construction yourself as an owner/ builder, then it is your responsibility to call in and request the type of inspection that is required.
There is a dedicated telephone line for building inspections, 954-784-3449, that can be called Monday through Friday, 8 am to 3 pm, to schedule an inspection or to find out the status of any inspection on your property. You can also check the building permit card, which is required to be conspicuously displayed on site, for the status of any inspection. If you call for an inspection before 3 pm, usually an inspection can be set for the next day. Occasionally an inspection may have to be scheduled for the following day due to the Inspector’s availability.

The City Commission holds its regular meetings on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month (with some exceptions).

All regular meetings are open to the public. On some occasions, the City Commission may hold a Special Meeting or a Workshop. They are scheduled on an as-needed basis. These meetings are also open to the public.
The City Commission may occasionally hold an Attorney-Client Session or Executive Session also on an as-needed basis. The very beginning and the very end of the Sessions are usually open to the public; however, the majority of the meeting involves litigation issues and is closed to the public, per Florida Statutes.
At all Regular Meetings, there is a time for "Public Comment and Requests Regarding Agenda Items" at the beginning of the meeting. There is another opportunity at the end of the meeting, called "Public Requests from the Floor," where the public may address the Commission on any personal concerns. Usually, a time limit of three minutes is adhered to for each individual.

The City's Code of Ordinances states the requirements for hedge heights throughout the City:
New plantings cannot be installed within the City right-of-way - Code Section 14.1.

There are four ways to file a compliant with Code Enforcement:
Effective July 1, 2021, a person designated as a code inspector may not initiate an investigation of a potential violation of a duly enacted code or ordinance by way of an anonymous complaint. A person who reports a potential violation of a code or ordinance must provide his or her name and address to the governing body of the respective board or county commissioners before an investigation occurs. This paragraph does not apply if the person designated as a code inspector has reason to believe that the violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare or imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources.
The Code Enforcement Office is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm. There is also an officer available on the weekends from 8 am to 4 pm.
If you have an emergency that cannot wait until normal working hours or if you need to contact the officer on duty during the weekend, you can call the Lighthouse Point Police Department dispatcher at 954-942-8080. They will either contact the Code Enforcement Officer, if on duty, or dispatch a Police Officer to investigate your complaint.
You can always visit the Code Enforcement Office during regular business hours to view the City’s code book. The City’s Code of Ordinances is also available online. At this screen you will be able to search or view the entire Code of Ordinances. 911 is for emergencies; situations that are perceived to be threats to property, injury, or life-threatening to people. For all other non-emergency situations, contact the Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue at 954-941-2624.

Police/Fire/Rescue is generally a free service to you when you call 911, funded by taxes. When 911 is called for emergency medical calls, our EMS crews respond and help determine if the patient needs to be transported to the hospital emergency room.
If transported, there is a charge billed to you or your insurance company for payment. It is important to know that transports to the hospital that are not medically necessary may not be reimbursed by your insurance company and will still need to be paid. Paramedics are able to offer transport alternatives for non-emergency transports.
Most medical calls require at least four team members to take care of a sick or injured person. Our rescue units carry two paramedics and our fire engines have at least two more fire/EMS personnel on the vehicle.
Depending on the illness or injury severity, more team members may be requested or canceled. Plus, when we respond to your call, if all of us are not needed we are available to respond to an additional incident if the need arises from your residence.
The paramedics on the rescue unit will assist injured persons while the firefighters on the fire engine will look for any hazards, such as fuel leaks, disconnect batteries and disable airbags. The firefighters may be needed to remove the doors or roof of the car to remove the injured person.
Plus, they will assist with the treatment of injured persons, if needed. The fire trucks carry various equipment/tools that may be needed on scene of an accident.
Only the patient or victim of an incident can obtain a report from the Fire Rescue Department. The administration office is located at 3740 NE 22nd Avenue.

This usually indicates that the battery is low and needs to be replaced. The smoke detector may also need to be replaced, as detectors normally have a 10-year life span. It is always best to replace your battery when the clocks change for Daylight Savings Time in the Spring and Fall of each year.

By direction of the City Commission, all open burning within the city limits of Lighthouse Point is prohibited. Fires for cooking are permitted.
Ceremonial fires are occasionally permitted with a request to the Fire Rescue Department. Contact the Fire Rescue Department at 954-941-2624 to request more information.
Several members of the Lighthouse Point Fire Rescue Department have been trained to assist residents with the installation of car seats. It is important to remember that there are as many types of car seats as there are cars and only by reading the instruction manual for the specific car seat will you be able to install it properly.

Some personal fire extinguishers cannot be recharged and must be thrown out after use or the expiration date is passed. Do not discard your used extinguisher in your curbside garbage. And it cannot be disposed of at the Household Hazardous Waste collection site in Broward County.
Check your local yellow pages for a listing of fire extinguisher/equipment companies to find a disposal site. For extinguishers that can be recharged, you need to contact a commercial fire extinguisher company for advice. We do not fill fire extinguishers.
When Police/Fire Rescue respond to your residence or business, they need the number. You should have 2 inch numbers on a visible place on the front of your residence.
Make sure trees and shrubs are trimmed so that the numbers are visible. This is also a City of Lighthouse Point City code.
Yes, simply stop by the fire station from 8 am to 8 pm. You may want to call first to be sure we are not out of the station. Blood pressure machines at local stores are not always accurate.
The Broward County Emergency Management Department, on an as-needed basis, opens shelters. In the event of an emergency, local radio and television broadcasts will advise the public of what shelters have been opened.
The current designed shelter sites for residents from Lighthouse Point are Lyons Creek Middle School in Coconut Creek, and Coral Glades High School in Coral Springs. During hurricane season check the City’s website section on Hurricanes for shelter address and additional disaster information.
For someone who is disabled, handicapped, and/or requires assistance with daily living activities there is a way to register for a Special Needs shelter. Contact the Broward County Elderly and Veterans Services office at 954-537-2888 for information/application for the special needs registry. This allows the agency to contact you to make arrangements so that an evacuation can be done in a timely and effective manner. You must be on their list prior to a hurricane.

All licenses issued shall expire on the 30th day of September of each year. The full license fee for one year shall be imposed for each local business license issued, regardless of the date issued, except any applicant not previously licensed by the city in the same occupation who shall apply for a local business license after April 1st of any year shall pay a local business tax for that year of one-half of the annual tax.
Each year, the City will begin sending renewal notices at the end of June. If the renewal notice is not received, it is still the responsibility of the business owner to ensure that their business tax is renewed prior to September 30th of each year.
Any person engaging in or managing any business within the City without first obtaining a local business tax license shall be subject to a penalty of 25% of the license determined to be due, in addition to any other penalty provided by law or ordinance. Licenses not renewed by September 30th shall be considered delinquent and subject to a delinquency penalty of 10% for the month of October, plus an additional 5% penalty for each month of delinquency thereafter until paid; provided that the penalty shall not exceed 25% of the local business fee for the delinquent establishment.
All local business licenses may be transferred to a new owner when there is a bona fide sale of the business upon payment of a $10 transfer fee and presentation of evidence of the sale and the original current license. Upon written request and presentation of the original local business license, any local business license may be transferred from one location to another in the city upon payment of a $10 transfer fee.

Having an alarm system is a matter of personal choice. Some people consider an alarm to be a deterrent to would-be thieves. Others feel that the alarm gives them added security when they are home or away. Alarm systems vary in cost, depending on what type of detection system is employed. Some components are readily available at home improvement centers for "do it yourself" installation.
Many licensed alarm companies are listed in the phone book. We recommend that alarm buyers get at least two bids for the work, ask for references, and make sure there is training for everyone who will use the alarm.
False alarms are a waste of police resources. After three false alarms you will be billed for police response. An alarm permit is needed and may be purchased at the Police Department.

Most of the traffic enforcement conducted by our officers is directly in response to specific complaints or traffic hazards. Unfortunately, our valued residents sometimes receive citations for the very traffic infractions that they have complained about. We realize that traffic citations are expensive and upsetting to most people. We have found, however, that they are an important part of our total enforcement concept. Be aware that these citations are not revenue producing for the City. Very little of this money goes directly to the City of Lighthouse Point.
If you do receive a citation that you think is unfair, refer to the back of the citation for directions as to how to challenge the citation in court.

You may also contest a parking citation by bringing the citation along with the vehicle in question (for Commercial Vehicle Violations) to the Police Department during business hours (8 am to 4 pm) Monday through Friday. You will need to speak to Commander Marchitello or the Road Patrol Sergeant on duty.
To get a vehicle out of impound, the registered owner of the vehicle must come to the Police Department at 3701 NE 22 Avenue.

The Lighthouse Point Police Department contracts with Lighthouse Auto to impound vehicles at the request of police. You will be given a Tow sheet which contains directions to Lighthouse Auto and general fees. All fees are set by Lighthouse Auto and are payable to same.
If a registered owner would like someone other than themself to pick up a vehicle, he/she will need to complete a letter stating who will be given power of attorney to do so. The letter must identify the person being given permission to obtain the vehicle, description of the vehicle, and must be formally witnessed by a notary.
If you parked your vehicle on private property and the vehicle is towed by the owner of the property; look in the area where you parked the vehicle for a tow-away sign. If you locate a sign it should tell you the towing company’s name and telephone number. If you cannot locate this information, you can contact the Lighthouse Point Police Department at 954-942-8080. The call taker should be able to assist you with locating your vehicle. When your vehicle is towed in this manner it is not a police matter, it is a civil matter, and the fees are assessed by the company that towed your vehicle.
If your property was collected and has not been submitted as evidence, you may call our office and set up an appointment with the Chief Property Clerk to obtain your property. A valid picture identification, such as a driver’s license or ID card, that shows a current address and your date of birth, will need to be presented at the time you retrieve your property. If your property has been submitted as evidence, it can only be released with permission from the detective or state attorney handling the case. Once authorization for release has been obtained, you may call and set up an appointment as listed above.
If you are unable to claim your property yourself, you may authorize a family member/friend to pick it up for you. They must present a formal notarized letter from you, giving them permission to do so. They must present a valid picture identification, such as a driver’s license or ID card, that shows a current address and date of birth when they come to claim your property.
Contact the Lighthouse Point Police Department at 954-942-8080 and give the call taker the location where the noise is coming from and what type of noise it is. An officer will respond and determine if the noise violates the current city noise ordinance provision. If a violation is verified, the offender may be warned or cited, depending on how many times the site is visited and a violation observed within the time frame specified by City Ordinance. The complainant does not need to agree to be contacted by the responding officer during the investigation of the noise complaint.
Please call 911 only when you have a bona fide emergency or when you have no way of obtaining our phone number (example: when you are in your car calling from a cellular phone). Otherwise, please keep our number near your phone for other times when you need to contact the police. Be aware that occasionally there is only one person manning our phones and dispatching fire and police calls. Calls must be prioritized depending upon what is occurring in the city. We apologize if you are put on hold.
Try not to call the Police Department if there is an interruption in your electric or other utilities. The Police Department is inundated with calls during these times and may not able to tell you when FPL will restore your service.
The Lighthouse Point Police Department recognizes good work accomplished by members of the Agency. Citizens are encouraged to write or call in and formally recognize commendable acts by police personnel that go above and beyond the call of duty. If you would like to thank or recommend a Department member for a commendation, you may call the Police Department at 954-942-8080 or send a letter to the Chief of Police.
Fingerprinting is conducted at the Police Department on Tuesday and Thursday between the hours of 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm and on Wednesday between the hours of 9:00 am to 11:00 am. There is a ten dollar charge for residents and local businesses; a 20 dollar charge will apply to everyone else. You must bring your print cards and photo identification.
If you feel a Lighthouse Point Police Department member acted improperly, a complaint may be made in writing, in person, or by telephone. Citizens should contact the on-duty Police Department Supervisor at the address or phone number listed regarding the allegations of misconduct.
An Internal Affairs Complaint Form will be completed and forwarded to the Internal Affairs Professional Standards Commander and Chief of Police for review. A preliminary investigation will then be conducted to determine if the complaint has merit. If merit exists, the investigation will be expanded. Citizens will be kept informed regarding the status of their complaints.

We take allegations of employee misconduct seriously. Consequently, if the investigation reveals the complaint was made maliciously, in bad faith, or with knowledge that the accusation was false, action shall be taken, whenever possible, to prosecute the complainant for making a false report.

Yes, the results must be attached to the application. Out of state applicants may turn in the application without the results, but will be required if further processing takes place. Certified Officers do not need a current CJBAT test.

Tree trimming on public property is a function of the Public Works Department. Tree trimming is done periodically and on an as-needed basis.

Streets are evaluated for degradation, structural integrity, and volume of traffic then rated by priority and need based on the annual budget.
The Public Works Department maintains the public roads within the City. Problems or requests for service can be reported to the Public Works Department at 954-946-7386.
You may report streetlight problems directly to the Public Works Department 954-946-7386, or residents may contact FPL directly at 800-4outage (800-468-8243) or online to report lights that are out.
The City provides garbage collection to all residential homes within the City limits. Garbage is picked up two days a week. The service area is divided into three sections: Recycling is picked up one time a week.
Bulk and yard trash is picked up twice a week on your regularly scheduled trash pickup days. Containers should not exceed 50 pounds in weight or 32 gallons in size. Bundles must be tied and are not to exceed four feet in length. Construction materials will not be picked up.
There is no need to schedule an appointment for large bulk items. They may be placed at the curb on your regular trash pickup days. If you require further assistance you may call the Public Works Department at 954-946-7386.
